Kiambu Aquatics Secretary Dr. Douglas Okatso, who also doubles as Director of Swim Safe Kenya, departed Nairobi last night for a combined holiday and professional development tour in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Speaking briefly at JKIA, Dr. Okatso—dressed in a Kenya-branded tracksuit—expressed his excitement and outlined the significance of the trip.

“I am grateful for the support we continue to receive from our partners. Part of this trip involves signing several contracts with employers in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. These agreements will allow us to recommend our graduates directly to workplaces abroad,” he said.

Opening Global Doors for Kenyan Aquatic Professionals

Swim Safe Kenya has been at the forefront of training lifeguards, swimming coaches, and water safety professionals. Their curriculum covers lifesaving, coaching, first aid, pool management, and other essential competencies required in the international aquatic job market.

The organization also collaborates with local institutions such as Kenyatta University and JKUAT, where they run lifesaving and water safety programs for students.

Dr. Okatso noted that part of his tour would involve reconnecting with former students currently working in cruise ships, water parks, hotels, and beach facilities across the UAE.

“They are doing impressive work, and I want to explore how Kenya can benefit more from such opportunities,” he added.

Absence Noted at Home Events

While away, Dr. Okatso will miss the Kiambu Aquatics Minnows Swimming Championship scheduled at Potterhouse School, Runda. He assured the organizing team that he would continue to support operations remotely.

A Blend of Work, Leisure, and Adventure

Although the trip includes official engagements, Dr. Okatso is also taking time to enjoy a much-deserved break. His itinerary features:

  • A visit to Abu Dhabi’s largest water park
  • Desert safari experience
  • A tour of the iconic Burj Khalifa
  • Dubai Fountain Show
  • Dhow cruise dinner along Dubai Creek
  • A night at a unique floating hotel

Friends close to him revealed that he also booked several surprise activities, including:

  • A visit to the Museum of the Future
  • A helicopter tour of Dubai’s coastline
  • Indoor skydiving at iFly Dubai — which he jokingly said he might “regret halfway in the air.”

Warm Welcome Abroad

Adding to the excitement, a group of Kenyan expatriates in Dubai has organized a small welcome dinner in his honor, further highlighting his strong ties with the Kenyan community abroad.

With a full schedule that blends work, exploration, networking, and adventure, Dr. Okatso’s trip is set to be both productive and memorable — strengthening global links while championing Kenya’s growing presence in aquatic safety and professional training.
