Swim Safe Kenya (SSK) has successfully concluded a one-week Scuba Diving and Lifeguard Refresher Training Program for over 30 KenGen staff members at the KenGen Turkwel Power Station in West Pokot.
The specialized training program was led by SSK’s chief instructors — Martin Maina, Douglas Okatso, and Victor King’ang’ai — who guided participants through advanced water safety practices, rescue techniques, scuba diving operations, and emergency response procedures.
Enhancing Water Safety and Operational Readiness
Set against the breathtaking landscape of Turkwel, where expansive waters stretch beneath towering escarpments, the refresher course focused on equipping KenGen’s water operations teams with enhanced professional and technical skills.
The program brought together divers, coxswains, and water operations personnel for intensive practical and theoretical sessions designed to strengthen their readiness to operate in challenging aquatic environments.
Building Masters of Water
In environments as demanding as Turkwel, water safety and operational preparedness remain critical. Through the structured refresher training, participants sharpened their expertise both beneath the surface and above it, improving their ability to respond to emergencies, protect critical infrastructure, and maintain safety during water operations.
The training covered:
- Advanced scuba diving techniques
- Lifeguard and rescue refresher skills
- Emergency response procedures
- Water operations safety protocols
- Team coordination during aquatic incidents
- Asset protection in high-risk environments
