On Saturday, 26th July 2025, the Lakewood Vantage Group of Schools hosted a vibrant and action-packed Sports Day, a momentous occasion that brought together students, teachers, and parents to celebrate physical fitness and teamwork. Gracing the event as the Chief Guest Speaker was Mr. Douglas Okatso, the Director of Swim Safe Kenya (SSK) and Honorary Secretary of the Kiambu County Aquatics Association.

Inspiring Words from a Water Safety Advocate

In his keynote address, Mr. Okatso passionately reminded students and parents of the critical role of sports in holistic development. He highlighted three key pillars of why sports matter in a child’s life:

  • 🏃‍♂️ Health & Energy: “Running, jumping, and playing help children grow stronger, boost their immunity, improve sleep quality, and enhance emotional well-being.”
  • 🤝 Team Skills & Friendship: “Sports teach cooperation, sharing, and fairness. Teamwork builds lifelong friendships and teaches young people how to uplift one another.”
  • 💪 Confidence & Challenge: “Every race and game offers a challenge. It pushes you beyond your limits and nurtures belief in yourself.”

His uplifting speech served as a timely reminder, especially as it came just a day after the World Drowning Prevention Day, a globally recognized day for raising awareness on water safety.

A Call for Water Safety and Swimming Education

Mr. Okatso took the opportunity to emphasize the importance of learning how to swim—not only as a sport but as a vital life skill. “Swimming is not just for leisure,” he said. “It’s a life-saving ability that every Kenyan should have. When more people learn basic survival swimming and water safety techniques, we can significantly reduce, if not eliminate, drowning incidents.”

He encouraged schools, communities, and parents to support swimming education and ensure that children are introduced to water safety at an early age. Through Swim Safe Kenya, Mr. Okatso continues to champion water safety programs, survival swimming lessons, and school-based water awareness initiatives across the country.

The Bigger Picture: Building a Safer, Stronger Generation

The Lakewood Vantage Sports Day event was not only about competition and medals but also about learning, motivation, and community development. Through events like these, children gain more than just physical strength—they build character, resilience, and life-saving knowledge that will shape their futures.
